More More Me

Great now theres a whole online feature on the FM website!

Our new album is out this week...

‘Evidence – the third album with Modular Moog-obsessive Ben ‘Benge’ Edwards, ferries the listener to a paranoid, dystopic, late-night city soundtracked by dense, pulsating synths, glacial melodies and ethereal half-sung, half-spoken vocals. Foxx’s creative fires still burn white hot.’ 4/5 MOJO

‘His relationship with young producer Benge has seen Foxx release his best music since the glory days of early Ultravox and debut solo album Metamatic, and Evidence is even more brimful of sci-fi sensuality than last year’s The Shape Of Things. Highlights include the dark house of Matthew Dear collaboration ‘Talk (Beneath Your Dreams)’ and two centre-piece excursions with Brighton electro maverick Gazelle Twin.’ 4/5 UNCUT

‘Foxx’s legacy has come to be revered, with his influence on electronic music recognised by the likes of The Orb and LFO. Evidence, Foxx’s third album in 3 years with The Maths, provides plenty of evidence why. The tracks are crafted and atmospheric and the collaborations serve to anchor the album in the present rather than the past.’ THE WIRE

‘Evidence offers 15 tracks of escapist, dreamlike ‘ballads’, glowing with sprawling analogue paranoia and grimy, debased atmospheres. The beauty lies in the music’s simplicity, of which the duo revel effortlessly throughout, as if they couldn’t be having more fun if they tried.’ 8/10 BARCODE

‘Foxx has refreshed his creative music with consistently excellent work in recent years. Lush and romantic, Evidence is the kind of timeless electronic album you can dream inside.’ 8/10 CLASSIC ROCK

‘The new John Foxx And The Maths album is quite something. A beauty.’ ELECTRONIC SOUND

‘The mood is dark and unsettling as Foxx combines the icy beauty of ‘My Town’ with the eerie ‘Changelings’, featuring the haunting voice of Gazelle Twin.’ 4/5 CLASSIC POP

‘A pulsing electro cover of Pink Floyd’s ‘Have A Cigar’ might be an unexpected (though warming) surprise, but the closing quartet of ‘Shadow Memory’, ‘Walk’, ‘Myriads’ and ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ sees Foxx and Benge simmering in exquisite fashion.’ 4/5 RECORD COLLECTOR

‘The third album from the cutting edge electro innovator’s adaptable outfit is another classy blend of off-kilter ambient atmospheres, dubbed dreams and general analogue silkiness. Pink Floyd’s ‘Have A Cigar’ gets re-rolled but Foxx’s own compositions exert a compelling fascination.’ 4/5 DAILY MIRROR

‘Rather than treat their analogue synthesizers as museum pieces, John Foxx and his electronic producer partner Benge have cranked their machines into life for a succession of albums of futuristic electronic pop. This Dark Lord Of Synth still wields fearsome power.’ Q MAGAZINE

‘Foxx has embraced technology to create something otherworldly, chilling and at times dream-like on an album that hangs together beautifully.’ 4/5 VIVE LE ROCK

‘Subtlety and ambience is the thing here. This garden of seemingly straightforward songs is nothing of the sort; it’s an analogue world of shifting details.’ 4/5 GAY TIMES

‘Lush basslines and dubby synths aplenty inducing a spaced out, slightly experimental but visceral vibe throughout.’ 7/10 FUTURE MUSIC

‘Ever since he started making music John Foxx has always sounded contemporary – and here, more than 35 years on, that remains the case. As a consequence Evidence is a mandatory listen for long time followers of Foxx and electronic music – but also for those new to the form.’ 5/5 DMC WORLD

‘If you already own John Foxx & The Maths’ previous albums Interplay and The Shape of Things then you need this album. If you don’t own those records then you need all three, and what a treat you have coming your way.’ 4/5 THIS IS NOT RETRO

Gainsbourg Vibes, Yeah

Check out this amazing Powerhouse drum machine that Dave brought into the studio. It uses 8-Track tape cassettes with groovy recordings of real drums and percussion. Could anything be more 70s?

I went to see the Kraftwerk Man Machine night at Tate Modern last week with Steve and Isobel (happy birthday Isobel!). Its a strange / magical venue for a concert. Then Phil sent me a link to them playing LIVE at the Roundhouse in 1976. Make your own mind up which version you prefer...

Good Company

A friend alerted me to this post over on Gizmodo. It's a post about awesome studios. Cheers Fabio!!

Remember when these guys visited and interviewed me and foxy in the studio? Well it looks like the film is coming along nicely, check out the trailer:

"I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition" 2013 official trailer from I Dream Of Wires on Vimeo.

"I Dream of Wires" (IDOW) is an upcoming, independent documentary film about the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer - exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. Written and directed by Robert Fantinatto, with Jason Amm (Ghostly International recording artist Solvent) serving as producer and co-writer, IDOW is set to receive it's festival premiere, May 2013

Preceding IDOW's official theatrical release, we will be releasing this special, extended cut: "I Dream Of Wires (Hardcore Edition)" (IDOW-HE) will be released independently on BluRay / 2xDVD, and shipped to all IndieGoGo and pre-order customers, June 2013. IDOW-HE is for the hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics, and will run approximately 4 hours long (!)

IDOW-HE is a strictly limited-edition item, available to order exclusively through from 2/11 - 5/31, 2013"

Future Music Now

I almost forgot! I am featured in this months Future Music magazine - theres an interview and a 40 minute video with me explaining some of my modular systems, and the studio is on the cover! As I am in america this issue isn't out yet so I haven't seen the magazine yet! But I did download the excellent iPad version. So if you like modular synths and/or me you should have a look NOW

Harmonic Fun

Here is a little demo I made using the Verbos 262v Harmonic Oscillator. Its a very interesting module. Google it (or why not try alta vista?) The touch plates are great with it because you can send pressure info to control the harmonics of the 262v. This patch also uses the 191 filter, the 190 reverb and the 288v delay

UPDATE Heres another one, but with different tunings on the touch plates:

To The Batcave!

I used to love watching Batman especially when they were in the Batcave. Its practically what I want my studio to look like inside thinking about it! I just found out it was filmed round the corner from where I am living, in Bronson Canyon. Actually lots of films have been shot there over the years, check out the wiki page. So I cycled round today and explored. Heres a little film I took and when I got home I made some bat-sounds on the Buchla 100

And heres what it used to look like in the 1960s:
